If you’re happy and you know it, flap your hands!
‘Stimming’ is a phrase that many of you will be familiar with. In a person with autism, stimming usually refers to specific behaviors that include hand- flapping, rocking, spinning, or repetition of words and phrases.
It’s not fully understood why stimming happens but some research suggests that the repetitive nature of stimming releases happy chemicals (beta-endorphins) in the brain. It can also be an emotional reaction, like hand flapping or jumping or both to show happiness.
Join the Diversely Human community and let’s show the wider community that stimming is more often than not a positive reaction or behaviour.
